Research guide
How to find research programs as an undergraduate.
Research opportunities are not limited to students with perfect resumes. Many undergraduate programs value curiosity, consistency, basic technical ability and a clear reason for wanting to explore a field.
Where research opportunities appear
Check university department pages, lab websites, professor announcements, national institutes, summer research programs, fellowship pages, conference student programs and official scholarship portals. Many opportunities are published quietly, so a regular search routine matters.
Prepare before you email
Read at least one recent paper or project page from the lab. Write a short note explaining your background, what you understood, why the work interests you and what you can contribute. Attach a focused resume and include links to projects, writing or code if you have them.
What improves your chances
- A clear area of interest instead of “any research opportunity”.
- Basic evidence of skill: code, notes, reports, experiments or reading summaries.
- A realistic timeline and availability.
- Respectful follow-ups after one or two weeks.
